Vacation Outfits for Mexico-A complete packing list for your next beach vacation!

It’s your first time away from your kid(s). It’s been a while since you and your husband have gone somewhere together, kid free. But, what should you pack? Where can you get a cute outfit these days? Allow me to help you through the prepping process.

From packing lists, to outfit suggestions, this post has it all before you get your YOUR time! I am certainly no fashion icon, but I order a lot and can tell you what’s actually worth it and what’s not.

I ordered a lot of my vacation outfits for Mexico from Amazon, Pink Lily, and borrowed from friends/family. Some links are affiliate links, meaning I may earn a small commission when you make a purchase.

Packing List

Lists have been my jam since as long as I can remember. From to-do lists for grade school to packing for family vacations, I love for a good list!

Let’s start with the fun part:

  • Swimsuits (1 for each day and an extra for the spa!) When you pack 1 per day you don’t have to worry about it being wet the next day. (ABOVE: Pink ribbed suit– order 1 size up! Orange two-piece– tts)
  • Coverups (1-2 will work for a few days there. This black coverup is perfect!)
  • Flip Flops or sandals for the beach (These Roxy sandals are super comfortable and hold up in water! Shown above)
  • Sunscreen, SPF 30 at least! A complete line-up of non-greasy, sunscreen that I have never burned with.
  • Sunglasses- Can you have too many? (ABOVE: pink mirrored, black aviators, oversized tortoise.)
  • Pool/beach hat- this one was the perfect size. Not too big and not too small where it doesn’t shade your face. I’m holding and wearing above!
  • Beach Bag– I borrowed this one from my SIL and got sot many compliments. It also made a perfect pool/beach bag and carry-on! There is an inside pouch that is attached and made a great passport and iPhone carrier. Pictured above & below!
  • Cell phone protector for the pool that floats!

Travel Essentials:

  • Passport, copy of passport just in case. I highly recommend getting a passport holder. I didn’t have one, but wish I did! Check this cute passport holder out!
  • Drivers License or State ID
  • Cash (Tipping cash! It’s best to have cash in 5s, 10s, 20s)
  • Book or Amazon Kindle (The Kindle is the BEST for reading at the beach or pool. Lightweight, no glare, and no dealing with pages!)
  • Download a movie or show to watch on the plane if you’re bringing your computer
  • Phone charger
  • Plane snacks. Did you know you can bring your own food on the plane? You may also want some snacks while you are abroad.
  • Hand Sanitizer
  • Face masks (your resort will also have them)

Personal and Hygiene:

FYI: Our hotel gave us a toothbrush, toothpaste, razor, shampoo/conditioner/body wash, shower cap. cotton swabs, hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers!

  • Skincare- (Since Mexico is very humid, I didn’t need to pack my favorite hydration serum, but I did use this Soothing skincare line everyday. It’s great for before and after the sun! Kept my skin calm and glowing while on vaca.)
  • Make-up -I have fallen in love with this mascara. It’s dark and thick enough, but not clumpy.
  • Hair care (hairspray for the humidity, brush, hair ties for pool/beach, curling iron)
  • Deodorant
  • Loofa- I like to pack a travel loofa because it’s nice to use after a day at the pool. It takes off all the sunscreen and sea-breeze.

Dinner Outfits:

We ordered room service most mornings, so I didn’t need a morning outfit. Also, lunches were at the pool, so my swimsuits and cover-ups were my lunch attire.

I chose to dress up each night for dinner. However, women can basically wear anything to dinner. But, men will typically need to wear pants and closed toe shoes for indoor dining restaurants. Call ahead to ask. If your man doesn’t have any, our hotel offered loaner pants!

  • Dresses- This blue and white dress is adorable and comes in every color. I ordered the blue one but it came a day too late for my trip. I plan to wear it in FL soon!

  • Rompers- This Amazon romper (I’m wearing it above) is the most flattering and comes in SO MANY colors! It’s a must have! It runs TTS. Below, is an adorable front tie pink romper from Pink Lily. It runs small, so size up!
  • Hats- I’ve always wanted a tan hat like the one I am in below. I bought this one at a local boutique, but check this hate out on Pink Lily!
  • Purses- This round rattan bag (seen above) just screams beach vacay and the inside is very cute! I also loved how lightweight this half circle bag was from Pink Lily.
  • Simple accessories (you will wear less than you think!)
  • Shoes- You will want comfy and cute flats for dinner. You will walk more than you think as you get around the resort at night! I did love these Steve Madden heels and they were so comfortable!

Our Resort

We flew to Cancun and then hired a car service to drive us to Riviera Maya. It was a 4 hour plane ride from Chicago and an hour and a half to the resort. As long as you have some beer in your ride over, it’s not bad at all.

We stayed at Secrets Akumal. I would recommend it! If you do book, I highly recommend joining the preferred club. There are a few exclusive amenities that we used daily.

The Food

The food was delish, except my least favorite meal was at the Mexican restaurant. Ironic? Very much so. The fresh seafood and Asian restaurants were my favorite.

We learned that the breakfast buffet was the BEST. Too bad we didn’t try it before the last day though!

On Sundays, they do a brick oven pizza lunch. Highly recommend.

One thing we did not try and regret, is the dinner buffets and shows. We heard they were delicious and it would have been nice to see a show with dinner too.

If you are in the preferred club, get all of your drinks there. They are the best on the resort.

The Spa

There is nothing like a Mexican spa in America. The hydrotherapy, saunas, steam rooms, relaxation rooms, outdoor showers, and service are well worth the extra cost.

I got a 50 minute relaxation massage and it was one of the best I’ve had.

Would we go back?

We would 100% go back to Mexico. We love it all! But we would probably not go back to this resort, only because we know of another one we want to go back to first. I would highly recommend Secrets Akumal, we had an awesome time, but we also like to change up our vacations!
